Nagoya to Takayama (2026): Day Trip or Overnight, and a Realistic Plan

By Mahalohana Checked Sources

Nagoya to Takayama on the JR Limited Express Hida takes about 2 hr 20 min; reserved seat ¥2,730. Shirakawa-go bus ¥2,800: day trip or overnight?

Takayama is a preserved Edo-period merchant town in the Japanese Alps, and the JR Limited Express Hida from Nagoya is the simplest way to reach it. The ride is long enough that the real questions are whether one day is worth it, what to reserve, and whether Shirakawa-go can fit in too.

Day trip or overnight: what actually fits?

A Takayama-only day trip from Nagoya is realistic if you leave in the morning and accept about 4 hours 40 minutes on the train. Takayama plus Shirakawa-go in one day from Nagoya is not. Stay a night in Takayama or go to Shirakawa-go by a different route. JR Central gives about 2 hours 20 minutes from Nagoya on the Hida, and Shirakawa-go’s tourist association gives about 3 hours 25 minutes one way from Nagoya via Takayama, which means nearly 7 hours of transit for the round trip, before any sightseeing.

Plan from NagoyaTransit time (official figures)Verdict
Takayama day trip by Limited Express HidaAbout 2 h 20 min each wayRealistic. About 4 h 40 min on the train round trip.
Takayama overnight, then Shirakawa-go by Nohi Bus2 h 20 min train, then about 50 min by busBest if Shirakawa-go matters. Morning market, Sanmachi and the village without a rushed return.
Nagoya → Takayama → Shirakawa-go → back, same dayAbout 3 h 25 min each wayNot recommended. Nearly 7 hours of transit round trip.
Direct express bus Nagoya → Shirakawa-go (skip Takayama)About 2 h 30 min by bus (about 2 h 50 min including the walk to the Meitetsu Bus Center)Shirakawa-go only. Skips Takayama; check the bus operator for fares.
Times from JR Central and the Shirakawa-go Tourist Association’s access page (checked October 22, 2026). Actual timetables vary by train and bus.

If you are coming from Tokyo or Kyoto, you reach Nagoya on the Tokaido Shinkansen first (see our Tokyo–Kyoto Shinkansen guide) and change to the Hida there.

The Limited Express Hida: route, scenery and what it is called

Board the Limited Express Hida at Nagoya Station and ride about 2 hours 20 minutes up the Takayama Main Line to Takayama. JR Central describes the ride as following the curves of the Hida River into the mountains, so take a window seat.

  • Name: JR Central’s pages say Limited Express Hida. The Shirakawa-go Tourist Association’s access page still says “Wide View Hida”. If you see either name, you want the Nagoya–Takayama train.
  • Time: about 2 hours 20 minutes. A JR Central sample itinerary departs Nagoya at 08:43 and has you in Takayama’s old town by 11:30.
  • Luggage: for hotel-to-hotel bags, use luggage forwarding.

Seat reservations and ticket prices

Reserve a seat for the Hida: a reserved ordinary-car seat from Nagoya to Takayama is ¥2,730 for adults (¥1,360 for children) as the ticketless limited-express charge on e5489, and a seat reservation is required during the all-reserved periods. That figure is the limited-express charge only. You also need the base fare, which we do not quote. Check JR Central’s fare search or a ticket machine for the total.

Source: JR Central ticketless limited-express and Saver 3 pages (checked October 22, 2026). The base fare is separate.
  • When to book: reserved seats go on sale at 10:00 a.m. one month before the travel date, at stations or through JR West’s e5489 service.
  • All-reserved periods: JR Central runs the Hida as all-reserved in Golden Week, Obon, Silver Week and the year-end/New Year period. An unreserved ticket cannot be used on it then, and standing tickets are limited if a train sells out.
  • JR Pass: Takayama’s city tourism site says the Japan Rail Pass is valid on the rail lines it lists for reaching Takayama; see our JR Pass break-even guide before buying one for this trip.

The Takayama–Shirakawa-go bus

Nohi Bus runs from Takayama Nohi Bus Center to Shirakawa-go in about 50 minutes for ¥2,800 one way (¥5,600 for a return using two one-way tickets), and some services are reservation-only. Nohi’s English page lists 16 round-trip services a day, with Takayama departures from 7:20 a.m. to 17:50 and one weekday-only evening departure at 19:00 (no service on Saturdays, Sundays and national holidays).

  • Where: the Nohi Bus Center is just outside JR Takayama Station, behind the police box. Takayama city notes that larger bags that do not fit a coin locker can be stored there for ¥500 a day.
  • Reservations: Nohi’s timetable marks reservation-required services with “R”. Reserve those online via Japan Bus Online or by phone with the Nohi Bus Reservation Center (9:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m.).
  • Onward: the same page lists fares from Takayama to Kanazawa (¥4,200) and Toyama (¥3,800).
  • Delays: Nohi warns that buses can run two hours or more late because of cars queuing to park at Shirakawa-go, heavy snow or expressway closures. Avoid booking a train home with a tight connection.
  • Return times: the last Shirakawa-go → Takayama departures on the published timetable are at 17:25 and 17:30, reaching Takayama at 18:15 and 18:35. Confirm the day’s timetable on Nohi’s page.

JR Central also sells a Hida Area Free Ticket (bus course) from Nagoya city for ¥12,370. It bundles round-trip Hida reserved seats, free rides between Hida-Kanayama and Hida-Furukawa and a Nohi Bus coupon (Shirakawa-go return, excluding reservation-only buses), valid 3 days and not usable Apr 27–May 6, Aug 10–19 and Dec 28–Jan 6. Compare its total with the individual fares before buying.

A realistic one-day plan: Nagoya → Takayama → Nagoya

Take a Hida that leaves Nagoya around 8:45, spend the day on foot in the old town, and head back in the late afternoon. Pick your return Hida in the timetable first and reserve both seats before you commit to the day.

  • About 8:45 – Nagoya: board the Limited Express Hida. Sit by a window for the Hida River gorge.
  • About 11:00 – arrive Takayama: store bags at the Nohi Bus Center (¥500 a day) or a coin locker if you want your hands free.
  • Late morning – Sanmachi: 12 minutes on foot from the station. Takayama city describes continuous wooden latticework, water channels under the eaves and sake breweries marked by cedar-leaf balls.
  • Lunch: JR Central’s sample itinerary suggests Hida beef steak or sushi.
  • Early afternoon – Takayama Jinya: the only surviving Edo-period local government office, about 15 minutes on foot from the station. ¥430 for adults; open 8:45 a.m.–5:00 p.m. from March to October and 8:45 a.m.–4:30 p.m. from November to February.
  • Afternoon – spare time: Hida Kokubunji temple is a 5-minute walk from the station.
  • Late afternoon: be back at the station 30–45 minutes before your reserved Hida departs; the seat is for one specific train.

Rough cost per adult: the limited-express reserved-seat charge each way (¥2,730 × 2), plus the base fare each way, plus Jinya ¥430 and a meal. A day trip leaves little or no time for the morning markets: they run 7:00 a.m. to noon from April to November and 8:00 a.m. to noon from December to March.

When an overnight stay is worth it

Stay one night in Takayama if you want the morning market, a slower old-town walk, or Shirakawa-go without a six-hour round trip squeezed around it.

  • Day 1: Hida from Nagoya (arrive around 11:00), Sanmachi, Jinya, an evening in the old town.
  • Day 2, early: Miyagawa Morning Market (about 15 minutes’ walk from the station; the stall count can drop to about 10 in rain or winter).
  • Day 2, bus: the 8:50 Nohi Bus reaches Shirakawa-go at 9:40. Afternoon return buses on the timetable leave at 14:00 and 15:15, reaching Takayama at 14:50 and 16:05.
  • Day 2, home: Hida back to Nagoya. Leave a buffer for bus delays, as Nohi itself warns about them.

Which parts of a Nagoya–Takayama trip are not worth doing?

Skip the same-day Shirakawa-go add-on from Nagoya via Takayama, and skip travelling without a reserved seat.

  • Skip Takayama + Shirakawa-go in one day. About 3 hours 25 minutes each way, plus a possible two-hour bus delay.
  • Skip turning up without a seat in a holiday period; an unreserved ticket cannot be used.
  • Skip the ¥12,370 Hida Area Free Ticket for a plain one-day Takayama trip.
  • Skip driving to Shirakawa-go in autumn unless you need a car: the Seseragi Park lot is open 8:00–17:00 (last entry 16:30), and heavy autumn bus traffic can reduce parking space for cars.
