Pre-departure decision guide
Prepare the few decisions that can waste your first hours or break a fixed day. Keep meals, local rides, and route-dependent extras flexible until the itinerary is real.

The three decisions that protect the trip
If you only do three things before the flight, make them these; each one is hard to fix in a hurry after landing, and none of them has to be expensive.
| Decision | Finish before departure when | Start here |
|---|---|---|
| Connectivity | You need maps, messages, QR tickets, or hotel contact as soon as you land. | Compare eSIM, SIM, and pocket Wi-Fi |
| Airport to hotel | You are landing late, carrying luggage, traveling with children, or staying somewhere that requires a transfer. | Compare airport routes |
| Timed tickets | Missing the date, park, or entry slot would materially change the trip. | Open the matching ticket guide |
Use this order: confirm the traveler and itinerary constraint, compare only the relevant options, read the current official rule, then open a verified purchase path. This prevents a fast checkout from becoming a slow problem after arrival.
1. Set up connectivity before the airport gets difficult
A travel eSIM can remove the need to find a counter or swap a physical card after landing, but only if the phone supports eSIM and is not locked to another carrier. A pocket Wi-Fi can fit a group or several devices better. A physical SIM or home-carrier roaming remains a useful fallback when device compatibility is uncertain.
In practice, a phone that works the moment you land is what makes every other arrival step easy: maps, the hotel’s message, your train and your tickets all depend on it.
- Check the device first. Confirm eSIM support and carrier-lock status before comparing data allowances.
- Install early when the provider allows it. Save the QR code and setup instructions offline, but follow the provider’s activation timing.
- Keep one fallback. Know whether airport Wi-Fi, roaming, a physical SIM, or pocket Wi-Fi can cover a failed setup.
Quick pick if your phone supports eSIM: Airalo (unlimited data from US$11.50 for 3 days, checked Oct 1, 2026). For a group or pocket Wi-Fi pickup at the airport, compare KKday and Klook in the eSIM guide.
2. Decide the airport-to-hotel route, not just the ticket
The best arrival route depends on the airport, hotel location, arrival time, luggage, group size, and number of transfers. The goal is not to book the most expensive option. It is to avoid solving a multi-step route while tired and carrying bags.
For a first-timer, the right question is “how many changes with my bags?”, not “which ticket is cheapest?”. One direct ride usually beats a cheaper route with two transfers at night.

| Your situation | First option to compare | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Hotel near Shinjuku Station | Narita Express | Direct rail service reaches Shinjuku without a Tokyo transfer. |
| Hotel served by an airport bus stop | Limousine bus | It can reduce station walking and luggage handling. |
| You value speed and can manage a transfer | Skyliner via Nippori or Ueno | The airport rail leg is fast, but Shinjuku still requires an onward connection. |
| Late Haneda arrival or difficult group logistics | Rail, taxi, and private transfer | Compare the final operating time, hotel route, bags, and per-person cost. |
3. Protect fixed dates and timed tickets
Buy early when a sold-out date or wrong product would remove a core experience. Admission, timed entry, and queue-skipping upgrades are not always the same product. Confirm the exact park or venue, date, entry method, change rules, and final seller terms before payment.
If missing the date would mean missing the experience, book it as soon as your dates are fixed; if it would only mean waiting a little, leave it.
| Experience | Decision to make first | Guide |
|---|---|---|
| Universal Studios Japan | Secure park admission before deciding whether an Express Pass is worth the extra cost. | USJ admission and QR entry USJ Express Pass choice |
| teamLab Planets | Confirm Toyosu, the exact time slot, and whether official-store flexibility or a reseller package fits better. | teamLab Planets ticket guide |
| Tokyo Disney Resort | Choose Disneyland or DisneySea and the fixed visit date before comparing sellers. | Tokyo Disney ticket guide |
| Shibuya Sky | Match the timed entry to daylight, sunset, weather risk, and rooftop restrictions. | Shibuya Sky ticket guide |
Do not begin with a discount code. Begin with the correct admission product and date. A lower price cannot repair the wrong park, missing admission, unusable time slot, or unsuitable cancellation rule.
Before you fly: travel medical insurance
Japan’s national tourism organisation, JNTO, strongly encourages visitors to have private medical insurance with adequate coverage. Medical bills for visitors can be high, and a visitor who leaves an unpaid medical bill can be refused entry later. First check what you already have: some credit cards and home policies cover medical costs abroad. Look at the medical limit, whether Japan is covered, and whether they offer cashless claims.
Save the numbers you would call on the trip as well: Emergency in Japan: numbers to save and what to do.
For most visitors, the useful check is simple: confirm what your card or home policy already covers in Japan before paying for a second policy.
Travel medical insurance for Japan: 2 options compared
Our pick: SafetyWing Essential. It shows a clear price and has a high medical limit. If you want a cheaper short policy and accept a lower limit, choose EKTA.
Choose by the medical limit and what is excluded, not by the daily price; a cheap policy with a low limit can leave you paying most of a hospital bill.
| Option | Price (checked Oct 1, 2026) | Conditions that matter | Link |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. SafetyWing Essential | US$62.72 per 4 weeks for ages 18–39. The price rises with age | Medical up to US$250,000. Covers lost checked luggage (US$500 per item, US$3,000 max) and travel delay. Does not cover pre-existing conditions | Check SafetyWing |
| 2. EKTA | Priced per day at quote. Example rate on its homepage: from US$0.99 a day for US$50,000 of cover | You choose the sum insured and the activity level. Some tariffs have a deductible (25% on START). The policy arrives by email in minutes | EKTA (new bookings and payments suspended since October 8, 2026) |

What can usually wait
Leaving these open is not a risk: Japan’s trains, shops and restaurants rarely require advance booking, and plans change once you see the weather and how tired you are.
- Most local train rides: keep them flexible unless a specific reserved train is essential.
- Broad transport passes: buy only after the actual eligible routes and travel days justify the pass.
- Casual meals and shopping: leave space for weather, energy, and discoveries after arrival.
- Low-demand attractions: do not turn every open hour into a non-refundable commitment.
For city transport, compare an IC card and subway pass after your daily routes are visible. For long-distance trains, check Shinkansen oversized-baggage rules before reserving seats when large luggage is involved.
Your final 24-hour check
Do this the evening before you fly, with everything saved offline, so that nothing on arrival depends on finding Wi-Fi.
- Confirm the phone can connect and the setup instructions are available offline.
- Complete Visit Japan Web and screenshot the QR code.
- Decide how you will pay for the first train: an IC card in Apple Wallet or bought at the airport.
- Save the airport route, last useful departure, hotel address, and one fallback.
- Open every ticket and confirm the venue, date, time, visitor count, and QR delivery.
- Download essential confirmations instead of relying on one email inbox or live connection.
- Keep the first arrival hours deliberately light. A delayed flight should not break a timed experience.

FAQ
What should I book before going to Japan?
Decide phone connectivity, the airport-to-hotel route, and any trip-critical fixed-date or timed-entry tickets. Leave route-dependent passes and flexible activities until the itinerary justifies them.
How early should I book Japan attraction tickets?
There is no universal lead time. Check the official sales window and live availability for the exact date as soon as the experience becomes itinerary-critical. Do not use an old social post as the final rule.
Should I buy a Japan eSIM before my flight?
It can reduce arrival friction if the phone supports eSIM, is carrier-unlocked, and the provider’s installation and activation steps are clear. Otherwise compare pocket Wi-Fi, a physical SIM, or roaming.
Do I need to pre-book airport transport?
Not always, but decide the route type and fallback before landing. Pre-booking becomes more useful for late arrivals, large luggage, children, groups, or hotels that are difficult to reach by rail.
Should I buy a JR Pass or subway pass before Japan?
Only when the actual eligible routes, operators, and travel days make the pass worthwhile. A pass should fit the itinerary; the itinerary should not be distorted to justify the pass.
