Hakone Day Trip from Tokyo (2026): Freepass or Per-Ride, and a One-Day Plan

By Mahalohana Checked Sources

Hakone day trip from Tokyo: Freepass ¥7,100 for 2 days vs about ¥7,130 per ride. Romancecar ¥1,200 each way, plus a one-day plan and ropeway fallback.

Hakone is the easiest mountain-and-lake day out from central Tokyo, but the ticketing is what trips people up: a 2-day pass for a one-day trip, five different operators’ vehicles, and a ropeway that can close for volcanic gas. This guide compares the Freepass against paying per ride in yen, shows how to get there from Shinjuku, and lays out a realistic one-day loop with a fallback if Owakudani is closed.

Hakone Freepass or pay per ride?

If your day includes the ropeway and the pirate ship, the Freepass is the cheaper and simpler choice even for one day; if it is only the mountain railway, pay as you go. The pass has no one-day version. The 2-day pass is the shortest, and Odakyu itself says it is “worth it even for a day trip.”

Pass prices and Romancecar surcharge from Odakyu Global. Rail, cable car, ropeway and cruise fares from the Hakone Tozan fare table and Odakyu Hakone’s fare notice. The ¥1,270 Shinjuku–Yumoto figure is our sum of ¥910 (Shinjuku–Odawara) and ¥360 (Odawara–Hakone-Yumoto); use Odakyu’s fare search for the exact through fare. The loop total excludes the bus, whose fare depends on your stops. A 3-day pass is ¥7,500 (child ¥1,850).

The pass is a bundle with a built-in cushion. Because the ropeway (¥2,000) and the cruise (¥1,700) are the two costliest legs, they decide the result. Without both, paying per ride wins. Showing the pass also earns discounts at roughly 70 museums, onsen and restaurants, and Odakyu sells the pass up to one month ahead, as a smartphone ticket or paper.

Getting from Shinjuku: Romancecar, regular trains or JR

Take the Romancecar if you want a guaranteed seat and about 40 fewer minutes; take regular Odakyu trains to save ¥1,200 each way. The Romancecar runs direct from Shinjuku to Hakone-Yumoto in about 80 minutes and every seat is reserved. Rapid Express and Express trains need only the regular fare, have few seats, and take about two hours.

  • Romancecar tickets: you need the regular fare (or the Freepass, or Suica/PASMO) plus the limited-express ticket. Seats go on sale at 10 a.m. Japan time one month before departure. Buying the ticket through Odakyu’s EMot online service saves ¥50. Front and rear panorama seats cost no extra.
  • Freepass from Shinjuku: good for one round trip between your Odakyu station and Odawara. It cannot be used after you return to the departure station, so do not spend a second day on it in Tokyo.
  • JR instead: the Freepass from Odawara (¥6,000) fits if you arrive on a JR train or Shinkansen. From Shinjuku the Odakyu pass is the better buy because it already includes your Odakyu trips (¥910 each way to Odawara on a regular ticket). For the JR fare to Odawara, use JR East’s fare search.
  • Luggage: the Romancecar suits big bags, but the Hakone buses and mountain railway do not. Send suitcases ahead with the luggage forwarding guide or use coin lockers at Hakone-Yumoto.
  • IC cards: a Suica or PASMO covers the regular Odakyu fare in place of a ticket. The IC card guide covers setup.

The five-leg Hakone loop, leg by leg

The loop is train, bus, ship, ropeway, cable car and train, and you can run it in either direction. Odakyu’s own sample day trip goes Romancecar, Hakone Shrine, pirate ship to Togendai, then Owakudani. The version below starts at the lake, so you ride the bus uphill in the morning and finish on the mountain railway.

  • Hakone Tozan bus (Hakone-Yumoto to Lake Ashi): the Hakone Shindo Line (R) takes about 25 minutes to Moto-Hakone-ko, the Kyukaido Line (K) about 35 and the Hakonemachi Line (H) about 40. The pass covers it. The operator warns that, because of crowding, you may not be able to board the bus you are waiting for. On weekends and holidays an optional ¥500 liner seat ticket guarantees a seat on a direct bus.
  • Hakone Sightseeing Cruise (pirate ship): Togendai–Hakone-machi or Moto-Hakone is ¥1,700 one way and takes about 25–35 minutes; Hakone-machi–Moto-Hakone is ¥600. The three ships have pirate-themed interiors, and the special room costs extra. On a clear day you can see Mt. Fuji and the lakeside torii of Hakone Shrine in the same view.
  • Hakone Ropeway: Sounzan to Togendai is ¥2,000 one way for the whole route, about 30 minutes end to end with a change at Owakudani. It runs 9:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m. from February to November (9:00–4:15 in December and January), with gondolas roughly every minute.
  • Hakone Tozan Cable Car: Gora to Sounzan is ¥430 and takes about 10 minutes (209 m of climb over 1.2 km).
  • Hakone Tozan Railway: Hakone-Yumoto to Gora is ¥460 and takes about 40 minutes, with three switchbacks on an 8.9 km climb.

Owakudani and ropeway closures

Expect the ropeway to close sometimes, and have a bus fallback ready before you leave. The operator measures sulfur dioxide at the ropeway: from 0.2 ppm it asks visitors to take care, from 2.0 ppm it advises finishing your sightseeing early, and at 5.0 ppm it suspends service. Wind, thunder and approaching typhoons can also stop it, and the operator announces planned inspection closures (last winter’s ran with replacement buses).

  • Who should not ride to Owakudani: the operator says people with allergic asthma, bronchial or respiratory disease, heart disease or a pacemaker, or who feel unwell, must not ride the ropeway to Owakudani. Pregnant women, infants, older travelers and people with allergies are urged to think hard about it.
  • Check first: Hakone Navi’s transportation info page shows live status for each line and the gas reading. Check it the morning you travel and again at Togendai or Gora.
  • If it is closed: from Togendai the Tozan bus Togendai Line (T) runs to Hakone-Yumoto in about 40 minutes and is covered by the pass. If bad weather cancels a service you hold the pass for, you may apply for a refund at your final station, but only for the unused modes.
  • Autumn crowds: the operator expects congestion on fine days in Golden Week, three-day weekends and the autumn leaf season. Colors at Owakudani usually start in late October and last to mid-November.

A realistic one-day plan from Tokyo

Aim for three real stops (Hakone Shrine, the ship, Owakudani) and treat the rest as travel time. The times below are our suggested pacing from the published ride times, not timetable data. Check the day’s departures on Hakone Navi, and start moving back by mid-afternoon because the ropeway stops at 5:00 p.m.

  • 8:00 a.m.: Romancecar from Shinjuku, arriving Hakone-Yumoto at about 9:20. Pre-book the seat; regular trains need a start around 7:15.
  • 9:30: bus (R line is fastest) to Moto-Hakone-ko, about 25 minutes.
  • 10:15–11:30: Hakone Shrine and its lakeside torii; walk back to the port.
  • 11:30: pirate ship from Moto-Hakone to Togendai (about 25–35 minutes). Eat at the port or at Owakudani Kitchen on the station’s second floor.
  • 12:30–2:30 p.m.: ropeway to Owakudani (change there if you continue), an hour at the viewpoints, then on toward Sounzan.
  • 2:30–4:15: cable car to Gora (10 minutes), mountain railway to Hakone-Yumoto (about 40 minutes), then a coffee or onsen stop.
  • About 5:00: Romancecar or Rapid Express back to Shinjuku, arriving around 6:30–7:00 p.m.

Rough budget per adult: Freepass ¥7,100, plus ¥2,400 if you ride the Romancecar both ways, plus lunch and entry fees. Freepass holders can also board the free-area Tozan buses without paying again.

What to skip

Skip extras that eat daylight: the loop already takes most of a day, so add a museum only if you drop a leg.

  • Skip the Freepass if you only want Hakone-Yumoto and the mountain railway.
  • Skip the Romancecar on a weekday when you are happy to stand or sit on a Rapid Express for two hours.
  • Skip the 3-day pass (¥7,500) unless you are sleeping two nights.
  • Skip a late start. After lunch you will meet the 5:00 p.m. ropeway closing and the last ship.
  • Skip the Owakudani walk if anyone in your group has a breathing or heart condition.

Day trip or overnight?

A day trip is enough for a first visit; stay a night only if you want an onsen evening and a slow second morning on the pass you already paid for. Odakyu pitches the 2-day pass as the overnight option and the loop above as the day-trip course. Compare it with the Kamakura day trip if you are choosing between two Odakyu excursions.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Hakone Freepass worth it for a day trip?

Yes, if you ride the ropeway and the cruise. The 2-day pass from Shinjuku is ¥7,100, and the same loop costs about ¥7,130 in single fares before the bus.

Does the Freepass include the Romancecar?

No. It covers the regular Odakyu fare but not the limited-express surcharge, which is ¥1,200 one way from Shinjuku to Hakone-Yumoto (¥600 for ages 6–11).

How long does it take to get from Shinjuku to Hakone?

About 80 minutes to Hakone-Yumoto on the Romancecar, about two hours on Rapid Express or Express. Add 25–40 minutes by bus to the lake.

What if the Owakudani ropeway is closed?

Take the Togendai Line bus (T) from Togendai to Hakone-Yumoto, about 40 minutes, which the pass covers. Check Hakone Navi’s status page before you go.

Does the pass cover the pirate ship?

Yes, the Hakone Sightseeing Cruise is one of its eight transport types. The special room costs extra.
