Kamakura Day Trip from Tokyo (2026): JR or Enoden, and a Realistic One-Day Plan

By Mahalohana Checked Sources

Kamakura day trip from Tokyo: JR ¥1,040 (IC ¥1,034, ~1 hour) vs Odakyu/Enoden and the ¥1,640 Freepass, plus a realistic one-day plan and what to skip.

Kamakura sits about an hour south of central Tokyo, with temples, a coastal local railway and enough walking that a first visit fills a full day. The confusing part is not whether to go — it is which train to take, and what to cut if you are short on time. This guide compares JR versus Odakyu and Enoden in yen and minutes, lays out a realistic one-day plan, and flags when a same-day trip from Tokyo is not worth it.

JR or Odakyu/Enoden: which way from Tokyo?

For a classic Kamakura day (Hachimangu + Great Buddha + Hasedera), take JR into Kamakura Station, then Enoden only for the short hop to Hase. Take Odakyu from Shinjuku only if Enoshima is a main goal, or if you buy the Enoshima-Kamakura Freepass. JR is faster to Kamakura Station itself. Odakyu lands you on the Enoshima side first, so you ride Enoden the long way into town.

JR paper/IC fares from Yahoo Transit and NAVITIME-style route results after JR East’s March 14, 2026 fare revision (checked October 15, 2026). Odakyu base and Romancecar charges from Odakyu’s Shinjuku–Katase-Enoshima fare table. Enoden section fares and Freepass from Enoden and Odakyu Global. Times are typical daytime trains.

A plain JR round trip from Tokyo or Shinjuku is ¥2,080 (or ¥2,068 with IC). Add Enoden Kamakura↔Hase twice (¥200 each way) and you are at about ¥2,480 before temple tickets. The Freepass at ¥1,640 only beats that if you also ride Enoden toward Enoshima or Fujisawa several times — which is exactly when the Odakyu route makes sense.

How to take JR to Kamakura

From Tokyo Station, board a Yokosuka Line train for Kurihama, Zushi or similar; from Shinjuku or Shibuya, board a Shonan-Shinjuku Line train bound for Zushi. Sit on the right side outbound if you want an occasional sea view near Kita-Kamakura. Tap a Suica, PASMO or other IC card at the JR gates — no seat reservation is needed.

  • Tokyo Station: Yokosuka Line platforms (underground). Direct trains take about 54–56 minutes. First trains leave just after 5:00 a.m.; last trains toward Kamakura run until around 23:35 (check the day’s board).
  • Shinjuku / Shibuya: look for Shonan-Shinjuku Line trains marked Zushi. Those run through to Kamakura. Other trains force a change at Ofuna for the Yokosuka Line. Frequency is roughly two direct trains an hour.
  • Shinagawa / Yokohama: the same Yokosuka Line stops here, so you can join mid-route if that is closer to your hotel.
  • Kita-Kamakura: one stop before Kamakura. Useful if you start with Engakuji or Kenchoji, then walk or hop one stop into central Kamakura.

JR Pass holders use these ordinary JR trains with no extra charge. A short Kamakura day alone still does not justify buying a JR Pass — see our JR Pass break-even guide. For a simple IC card setup, see the IC card guide.

When Enoden (and Odakyu) are worth it

Use Enoden as a short local hop from Kamakura Station, not as your main ride from Tokyo. Kamakura → Hase is ¥200 and about five minutes; Kamakura → Enoshima is ¥260 and about 23 minutes. The Noriorikun one-day Enoden pass is ¥800 adult / ¥400 child — worth it only if you ride more than a couple of section tickets.

Enoden trains are short, frequent and often crowded on weekends. Buy Noriorikun (¥800) only if you hop on and off more than twice.

  • Great Buddha / Hasedera: Enoden to Hase (EN12), then a short walk. Kotoku-in is about 7–10 minutes from Hase; Hasedera is closer.
  • Enoshima: continue past Hase toward Enoshima Station, or start from Odakyu at Katase-Enoshima / Fujisawa.
  • Enoshima-Kamakura Freepass (¥1,640 from Shinjuku): includes an Odakyu round trip between Shinjuku and the Fujisawa–Katase-Enoshima area plus unlimited Enoden for one calendar day. Romancecar seats cost extra (about ¥750 one way to Katase-Enoshima on Odakyu’s published table; online ticketless is often ¥50 cheaper).
  • IC cards: Suica and PASMO work on Enoden and Odakyu for ordinary fares. Limited-express Romancecar tickets are separate.

A realistic one-day plan from Tokyo

Aim for three stops, not five: Tsurugaoka Hachimangu, the Great Buddha (Kotoku-in), and Hasedera — then decide whether you still have legs for Komachi-dori snacks or Enoshima. Leave Tokyo by 8:00–8:30 a.m.; temples open around 8:00 and close about 5:00 p.m. in cooler months (Kotoku-in closes 5:00 p.m. October–March, 5:30 p.m. April–September).

  • Morning (arrive ~9:30–10:00): walk from Kamakura Station up Wakamiya-oji to Tsurugaoka Hachimangu. Grounds are free to enter; some museum or special areas charge separately.
  • Late morning: Enoden to Hase (¥200). Visit Kotoku-in — ¥300 adult, ¥150 ages 6–12, plus ¥50 to enter inside the Great Buddha — then Hasedera next door (¥400 adult / ¥200 ages 6–11).
  • Lunch: around Hase or back toward Kamakura Station / Komachi-dori. Weekends get long queues; pick a second-choice restaurant before you are starving.
  • Afternoon option A (stay in Kamakura): stroll Komachi-dori, or add one Zen temple at Kita-Kamakura if energy remains.
  • Afternoon option B (Enoshima): Enoden onward to Enoshima (¥260 from Kamakura, or covered by Freepass / Noriorikun). Only do this if you left Tokyo early; sunset return trains fill up.
  • Return: JR from Kamakura Station toward Tokyo / Shinjuku. Build a buffer before dinner reservations in Tokyo.

Rough day budget per adult (JR route, three sights): trains about ¥2,480 round trip including Enoden to Hase twice; Kotoku-in ¥300; Hasedera ¥400; lunch ¥1,500–¥2,500. Total often lands around ¥5,000–¥6,500 before souvenirs. Leave large suitcases in Tokyo — Kamakura’s station coin lockers fill early on weekends; see luggage forwarding if you are changing hotels that night.

What to skip if you are short on time

If you only have a half day, do Hachimangu and the Great Buddha — drop Enoshima, Zen temple circuits and long hike trails. Trying to “do Kamakura and Enoshima and Yokohama” in one day usually means photographing gates instead of going inside.

  • Skip Enoshima on a first Kamakura day unless the Freepass already paid for the Odakyu ride and you arrived before 10:00.
  • Skip starting after lunch — you will hit closing times and the evening Enoden crush.
  • Skip Odakyu+Enoden from Shinjuku “for the scenic ride” when your only goal is Kotoku-in; you spend almost twice as long getting to Kamakura Station.
  • Skip buying Noriorikun for a single Kamakura↔Hase round trip (¥400 vs ¥800).
  • Skip weekend midday without a plan B lunch — Komachi-dori queues can erase an hour.

Day trip or overnight?

Same-day is enough for most first-timers. Stay overnight if you want Enoshima at dusk, an early hike before day-trippers arrive, or a slower temple morning without watching the clock for the last convenient JR train. Hotels in Kamakura cost more than a second Tokyo night for many travelers, so overnight is a preference call, not a logistics requirement.

Frequently asked questions

Is Kamakura worth a day trip from Tokyo?

Yes, if you want temples and a coastal town within about an hour of central Tokyo. It is denser and easier than Nikko or Hakone for a single day, but still needs an early start.

JR or Enoden from Tokyo?

JR for the ride from Tokyo. Enoden only after you arrive in Kamakura (or if you approach via Fujisawa/Enoshima on Odakyu). Enoden does not run into central Tokyo.

How much is the train from Tokyo to Kamakura?

¥1,040 one way by JR paper ticket from Tokyo Station or Shinjuku (¥1,034 with an IC card), checked October 15, 2026 after JR East’s March 2026 fare revision. Children 6–11 pay roughly half.

Do I need to book seats?

No for JR Yokosuka / Shonan-Shinjuku ordinary trains or Enoden. Yes for Odakyu Romancecar limited-express seats.

Is the Enoshima-Kamakura Freepass worth it?

At ¥1,640 from Shinjuku it beats buying Odakyu round trip plus several Enoden tickets if Enoshima is on the plan. If you only ride JR into Kamakura and Enoden once to Hase, stick with IC fares.
