Hiroshima is one of the longer day trips from Osaka or Kyoto, and it is really two destinations: the Peace Memorial Park and Museum in the city, and Itsukushima Shrine on Miyajima island, with a train and a ferry between them. The hard part is fitting a Shinkansen, a local train, a boat and two closing times into one day. This guide gives operator-published fares, hours and ferry times, a realistic one-day order, and when to sleep in Hiroshima instead.
Day trip or overnight: which is better?
For a first visit, a day trip is doable but full; one night in Hiroshima is the more comfortable choice if you want both the museum and the shrine without watching the clock.
| Option | What you pay | Best when |
|---|---|---|
| Same-day round trip by Sanyo Shinkansen | Regular fare: check JR West’s live fare search. Foreign visitors can buy a Discounted One-way Ticket, Osaka City to Hiroshima City, ¥7,900 adult (overseas sale only) | You have one spare day and want to keep your Osaka or Kyoto hotel |
| Overnight in Hiroshima | Same train fares plus one hotel night | You want the museum’s early or evening slots, a relaxed Miyajima, or you are continuing west |
| Kansai-Hiroshima Area Pass | ¥17,000 adult, 5 days; covers reserved seats on the Sanyo Shinkansen (Shin-Osaka–Hiroshima) and the JR West Miyajima Ferry | Several days of Kansai–Hiroshima rides; a poor fit for one single day trip |
| JAPAN RAIL PASS | Pass price on the official pass site; Nozomi and Mizuho are not covered, and the JR West ferry is | You are already doing a longer multi-city rail itinerary |
Two Discounted one-way tickets come to ¥15,800 before ferry and local fares, so the ¥17,000 five-day pass only pays off if you take several more rides in those five days. Our JR Pass break-even guide covers the larger decision.
Getting from Osaka or Kyoto to Hiroshima
Take a Sanyo Shinkansen train to Hiroshima Station, then change to a JR San-yo Main Line train bound for Iwakuni and get off at Miyajimaguchi. JR West’s ferry operator describes this as the standard route and gives about 28 minutes for the Hiroshima Station–Miyajimaguchi leg.
- Starting point: the Sanyo Shinkansen section the passes refer to runs between Shin-Osaka and Hiroshima. From Kyoto, check JR West’s route search for your train and fare before you plan the morning.
- Ride time and regular fare: we did not find these on a static official page, so look them up in JR West’s ticket search or the timetable on the day.
- Discounted option: the Sanyo Shinkansen Discounted One-way Ticket is ¥7,900 adult (¥3,950 child) between Osaka City and Hiroshima City. You must hold a foreign passport and enter Japan as a temporary visitor, you buy an exchange order at an overseas travel agency, and it is not sold inside Japan. Check the participating-station list on the page.
- Big luggage: JR West says passengers boarding the Tokaido-Sanyo-Kyushu Shinkansen with oversized baggage (total dimensions of 160 cm or more) must reserve a seat with an oversized baggage area. See oversized baggage seats.
The JR West ferry to Miyajima
Walk from Miyajimaguchi Station through the underpass to the ferry terminal, tap an IC card or buy a ticket, and cross in about 10 minutes for ¥200 one way (¥400 round trip) — then pay the ¥100 Miyajima visitor tax. Child fare is ¥100 one way (children aged 6 to 12 on the JR ferry, elementary school age on Matsudai).
- Two operators: JR West Miyajima Ferry and Miyajima Matsudai Kisen both run Miyajimaguchi–Miyajima and both list ¥200 adult one way. Only the JR West ferry is covered by the JAPAN RAIL PASS and the JR-WEST RAIL PASS.
- Great Torii ferry: JR West sailings that leave Miyajimaguchi between 9:10 and 16:10 pass close to the gate in the same 10 minutes; the operator says the best view is on the right side facing forward. It also notes a restoration project is underway for the gate.
- Frequency: on JR West’s regular timetable, boats leave Miyajimaguchi at :10, :25, :40 and :55 from 8:10 to 17:55, then slightly less often into the evening. The last regular sailing back from Miyajima is 22:14.
- Visitor tax: ¥100, charged separately on entering the island; preschool children are exempt, and rail pass holders still pay it.
- Cards: the JR ferry accepts transit IC cards at the gate; see our IC card guide if you do not have one.
Itsukushima Shrine: hours, fees and the tide
Plan about an hour at the shrine itself and arrive well before it closes: from October 15 to November 30 it is open 6:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., and entry is ¥300 for adults. From March 1 to October 14 closing is 6:00 p.m.; in December it is 5:00 p.m. JR West says it is about a 12-minute walk from the Miyajima pier to the shrine.
- Admission: adults ¥300, high school students ¥200, elementary and junior high school students ¥100. A combined ticket with the Treasure Hall is ¥500 adult and can only be bought at the shrine entrance.
- Treasure Hall: open 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. year-round.
- The gate and the tide: JR West describes the gate as standing in the sea and says you can walk out to it at low tide. Check a tide table for your date; high tide and low tide look very different.
- Shoes: wear comfortable shoes; the corridor floorboards have gaps and high heels can get stuck.
Peace Memorial Park and Museum
Give the museum at least a calm hour and book a web ticket: admission is ¥200 for adults, and the museum warns of crowding and recommends online tickets. JR West describes the park as the site of the museum and the Atomic Bomb Dome, with a cenotaph for the victims.
- Hours (September to November): 7:30 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., with last entry 30 minutes before closing. March to July is the same; August runs to 8:00 p.m.; December to February closes at 6:00 p.m.
- Reservations: the extended slots (7:30–8:30 a.m. and, in autumn, 5:30–7:00 p.m.) need a web ticket. The regular ticket counter and machines operate 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. in autumn.
- Closures: December 30–31 and the middle of February.
- Getting there: we did not find an official walking or tram time from Hiroshima Station on the operators’ pages, so use a live route search.
A realistic one-day plan from Osaka or Kyoto
Reach Hiroshima Station by about 9:00 a.m., do Miyajima in the morning, and save the Peace Memorial Museum for the afternoon, when it stays open later than the shrine. Pick your Shinkansen from JR West’s timetable to match.
- By ~9:00 a.m.: arrive at Hiroshima Station.
- ~9:15–10:00: JR to Miyajimaguchi (about 28 minutes plus a wait). Catch a Great Torii ferry if one lines up (departures 9:10–16:10).
- ~10:15–12:30: pay the ¥100 visitor tax, walk about 12 minutes to the shrine, enter for ¥300, and take your time on the corridors. Check the tide first.
- ~12:30–1:30: lunch on the island; choose a second-choice place before you are hungry.
- ~1:30–2:30: head back to the pier; sailings leave every 15 minutes during the day. Allow time to return to Hiroshima Station.
- ~3:30–5:30: Peace Memorial Park and Museum. The museum is open to 7:00 p.m. in autumn with last entry 30 minutes before; an evening web ticket (5:30–7:00 p.m.) is a quieter option.
- Evening: return to Osaka or Kyoto. Check the last Shinkansen back on JR West’s timetable before you commit to an evening museum slot.
Fixed costs on the ground, per adult: ferry round trip ¥400, visitor tax ¥100, shrine ¥300, museum ¥200 — ¥1,000 in total, before Shinkansen fares, the Hiroshima Station–Miyajimaguchi JR ride, city transport and food.
What to skip if you are short on time
If you only have one day, skip the island’s extras and any third Hiroshima sight — shrine, museum, and the transit between them already fill the day.
- Skip the Treasure Hall unless you have spare time; it adds ¥200 on the combined ¥500 ticket.
- Skip leaving Miyajima late. The shrine closes at 5:30 p.m. from October 15.
- Skip buying the Kansai-Hiroshima Area Pass for a single day trip; it is priced for five days (¥17,000).
- Skip paying the Nozomi supplement on a JR Pass unless the time saving really matters to your day.
Frequently asked questions
Can you do Hiroshima and Miyajima in one day from Osaka?
Yes, with an early start and two clear priorities: the shrine and the museum. Look up your Shinkansen times first; the shrine closes at 5:30 p.m. from October 15.
How much is the ferry to Miyajima?
¥200 adult and ¥100 child one way (¥400 and ¥200 round trip) on both JR West and Miyajima Matsudai Kisen, plus a ¥100 visitor tax per person when entering the island. The crossing takes about 10 minutes.
Does the JR Pass cover the Miyajima ferry?
Yes for the JR West Miyajima Ferry; the operator says you can use the Japan Rail Pass and the JR-WEST Rail Pass. It does not cover the Matsudai boats, and you still pay the ¥100 visitor tax.
What are the opening hours and prices for the shrine and museum?
Itsukushima Shrine: 6:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. (October 15–November 30), ¥300 adults. Peace Memorial Museum: 7:30 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. in September–November, ¥200 adults; early and evening slots need a web ticket.
Is the Great Torii always standing in water?
No. JR West says you can walk out to it at low tide. Check a tide table for your date; the ferry operator also lists a restoration project for the gate.
